Before you buy
More than engine size. The details matter.
Two engines with the same displacement are not necessarily interchangeable. Engine codes, fuel type, electronics and emissions equipment can vary between years and vehicle versions.
01
Match the engine code
Send your VIN, engine size and engine code if known. Matching only the year, make and model may miss important differences such as turbocharging or fuel type.
02
Know what is included
A used engine assembly may not include the alternator, starter, AC compressor, wiring or control modules. Ask which accessories are included and which must transfer from your vehicle.
03
Ask about condition
Request available donor mileage, condition information and any test results. Mileage alone does not establish an engine’s condition; ask about warranty and return terms before buying.
04
Check emissions compatibility
A replacement must suit your vehicle’s emissions configuration and applicable requirements. Confirm compatibility with your installer rather than assuming a similar engine will work.
05
Plan the installation
Have a qualified repair shop confirm the match and identify the original failure. Follow the vehicle-specific service instructions for seals, fluids, cooling checks and any required programming.
General buying guidance only. Vehicle-specific service information and your installer’s compatibility checks take priority.
Common questions
Are these new or remanufactured engines?
No. Stellar Auto Parts buys and sells used parts. Ask for the specific engine’s condition, included components and terms when reviewing your quote.
Will the same engine size fit my vehicle?
Not always. Engine code, production year, electronics and emissions equipment can affect compatibility. Share your VIN and have your installer confirm the replacement.
What should I put in the notes?
Include the engine size and code if known, the issue your shop diagnosed, and whether you need a complete assembly or specific components. Tell us about any modifications.
